Termites: Don't Invite 'Em

Make your home a termite-free zone

Not all visitors to your home are invited. Besides burglars and moisture there's termites. How to un-invite termites?

Just remove their "welcome mat". Many homeowners not only invite termites they actually build super highways with improperly planned and planted trees, shrubs and mulch that creates rush hour-quality traffic for the hungry hordes flowing into their home.

How? By planting and mulching too close to the foundation.

  • Termites are attracted by plants, shrubs and trees so don't plant anything within 18-inches of your home and you won't give them anything to munch on.
  • Mulch is a problem too. Use a layer of inedible gravel or flagstone instead.
  • Termites also need moisture so be sure nearby ground slopes away for water run-off.
  • Also large trees shouldn’t be closer than 20 feet because their extensive root systems form a perfect underground highway system leading directly into your home.

Landscape with care and say "no vacancy" here.

Trojan Lumber Building Tips

How Long Should A Nail Be?

And how does that "penny" system work?

You have a couple pieces of wood you want to nail together. But what size nail should you use. What length nail should you use for a one-inch board? Two-inch board? And what is an 8 penny or 16 penny nail?

The accepted rule is to use nails that are two and one-half times the thickness of the wood you are nailing through. So, for one-inch thick lumber, use a 2-1/2-inch nail (or an 8-penny nail) and for two-inch thick material you’d use a 4-1/2-inch nail (or an 16-penny nail).

Here's how the "penny" system works: Nails that are sized based on the penny system use a number and a small letter "d". To figure out how long a nail is, divide the size by four and add a half-inch. Thus a 12 penny nail is (12 divided by 4=3), (+ one-half inch), makes it a 3-1/2-inch nail.
